IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe an ambition that you haven't achieved.

You should say:

  • What it is
  • Why you haven't achieved it
  • What you have already done
  • And explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

One ambition I haven't achieved yet is to run a full marathon. I've always admired people who can run such long distances, and I wanted to challenge myself to do the same. However, I haven't achieved this goal because of my busy schedule and lack of consistent training. Between work and family responsibilities, it's hard to find enough time to prepare properly for such a big race. So far, I've taken small steps toward this goal. I started by running short distances, like 5 kilometers, and gradually increased my running time. I also joined a local running group for motivation and advice. But I still haven't reached the level of fitness needed for a full marathon. Honestly, I feel a bit disappointed that I haven't achieved this yet, but I'm also proud of the progress I've made. Running has become a part of my life, and I enjoy it even if I'm not ready for a marathon. I believe that one day, with more time and effort, I will cross that finish line. Until then, I'll keep working toward my dream.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about an unachieved ambition, start by clearly stating what your ambition is—like becoming a doctor or traveling somewhere. Then, explain why you haven't achieved it yet—maybe it's due to time, money, or other priorities. Next, talk about what steps you've already taken toward this goal, such as studying, saving money, or planning. Finally, share your feelings about it—are you disappointed, motivated, or hopeful? Keep your answer structured but natural, like telling a story. Use simple words and connect your ideas smoothly. For example, 'My ambition is to visit Japan, but I haven't gone yet because I've been saving money. So far, I've researched places to visit and learned some basic Japanese. I feel excited but also a bit impatient because I really want to go!' Remember to stay relaxed and speak clearly.
