IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a movie you watched recently.

You should say:

  • When and where you watched it
  • Who you watched it with
  • What it was about
  • And explain why you chose to watch this movie

Sample Answer

Recently, I watched the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" at home last weekend. I watched it with my younger brother because we both love inspirational stories. The movie is about a man named Chris Gardner, who struggles to build a better life for his son while facing homelessness and financial problems. Despite all the challenges, he never gives up and eventually succeeds in becoming a successful stockbroker. I chose to watch this movie because I had heard a lot about its powerful message of perseverance and hope. My brother and I were feeling a bit stressed about school and exams, so we thought this movie might motivate us. The scene where Chris and his son sleep in a subway bathroom was especially moving. It made me realize how lucky I am and how important it is to keep trying, no matter how hard things get. Overall, the movie was not only entertaining but also very meaningful. It reminded me that hard work and determination can lead to success, which is a lesson I’ll always remember.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about a movie you watched recently, start by organizing your answer into clear parts. First, mention when and where you watched it—like last weekend at home or in a cinema. Then, say who you watched it with, such as friends or family. Next, briefly explain what the movie was about, focusing on the main plot without too much detail. Finally, share why you chose to watch it—maybe because of the actors, a recommendation, or the genre. Keep your language simple and natural, and try to connect your ideas smoothly. Pay attention to your pronunciation and fluency, and don’t forget to use past tense correctly since you’re talking about something that already happened. Practice timing yourself to fit all this into 1-2 minutes!
