IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a goal you set that you tried your best to achieve.

May - Aug

You should say:

  • what it was
  • when you set it
  • what you did to achieve it
  • and explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

One goal I set for myself was to run a half-marathon. I decided to do this about a year ago because I wanted to challenge myself and improve my fitness. At first, I could barely run for 10 minutes without feeling tired, but I was determined to reach my goal. I started by making a training plan. I ran three times a week, slowly increasing the distance each time. On weekends, I ran longer distances to build my stamina. I also joined a local running group for motivation and advice. There were days when I felt too tired or lazy, but I reminded myself of the goal and kept going. After six months of training, I finally ran the half-marathon. It was tough, especially the last few kilometers, but crossing the finish line felt amazing. I was so proud of myself for not giving up. This experience taught me that with hard work and persistence, I can achieve anything I set my mind to. It also made me feel more confident in other areas of my life.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about a goal you set and tried your best to achieve, here's a simple way to structure your answer. First, introduce the goal—what it was and why it mattered to you. For example, maybe it was learning a new skill or getting a good grade. Next, mention when you set this goal—was it last year, during a special time, or for a specific reason? Then, explain what you did to achieve it. Talk about the steps you took, like studying hard, practicing every day, or asking for help. Finally, share how you felt about it—were you proud, relieved, or maybe even disappointed if things didn’t go perfectly? Remember to use linking words like 'first,' 'then,' and 'finally' to keep your answer smooth. Also, try to add details to make it interesting, like how long it took or any challenges you faced. Keep it natural, like you’re telling a story to a friend!
