IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a difficult decision you once made.

You should say:

  • What the decision was
  • When you made this decision
  • How long it took to make the decision

Sample Answer

One of the most difficult decisions I ever made was whether to move to a new city for a job opportunity. This happened about two years ago when I was offered a better job in another city. The job had higher pay and more chances to grow, but it meant leaving my family and friends behind. I remember thinking about this decision for almost a month. Every day, I would weigh the pros and cons. On one hand, the job was a great step for my career. On the other hand, I loved my life where I was. I had my family nearby, and my friends were like a second family to me. It was really hard to imagine starting over in a new place. Finally, after many sleepless nights and long talks with my family, I decided to take the job. It wasn’t easy, but I knew it was the right choice for my future. Looking back now, I’m glad I made that decision because it helped me grow both professionally and personally. But at the time, it felt like the hardest thing I’d ever done.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe a difficult decision you once made,' here's how to structure your response. Start by briefly explaining what the decision was—keep it simple, like choosing a career path or moving to a new city. Then, mention when you made this decision, like during high school or last year. Next, talk about how long it took you to decide—was it a quick choice or did you think about it for weeks? To make your answer strong, add details about why it was hard (maybe it affected your family or future) and how you felt (nervous, confused, etc.). Don’t forget to use linking words like 'first,' 'then,' and 'finally' to keep it smooth. Practice speaking naturally, and focus on fluency over fancy words. Remember, the examiner wants to hear your story, not a perfect speech!
