IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

A new law you would like to introduce in your country

You should say:

  • What law it is
  • What changes this law brings
  • Whether this new law will be popular
  • Explain how you feel about this

Sample Answer

The law I would propose is a ban on the sale and use of single-use plastic products, such as plastic bags, straws, utensils, and food containers. I believe this law is necessary to address the growing environmental crisis caused by the excessive production and improper disposal of plastic waste. If enacted, this new law would bring about several important changes. Firstly, it would prohibit retailers from providing single-use plastic items to customers, forcing them to instead offer more sustainable alternatives like reusable cloth bags, compostable paper straws, and biodegradable containers. This would significantly reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills, waterways, and the ocean, harming wildlife and the natural environment. Secondly, the law would incentivize businesses and consumers to adapt to a more eco-friendly mindset. Companies would need to invest in developing and procuring environmentally-friendly packaging and disposable products, while individuals would have to get into the habit of bringing their own reusable items when shopping or dining out. I believe this new law would be quite popular, especially among younger generations who are increasingly concerned about climate change and environmental protection. Many people are already making conscious efforts to reduce their plastic waste, so a nationwide ban would be seen as a positive step forward. That said, there may be some pushback from certain industries, like fast food chains, that rely heavily on single-use plastics and would face higher costs to transition to alternative materials. Personally, I feel very passionate about this issue and believe the implementation of this law is long overdue. I've seen firsthand the devastating impact of plastic pollution in my community, with litter and microplastics contaminating our local beaches and waterways. As a parent, I'm also worried about the health and environmental consequences that my children and future generations will have to grapple with if we don't take urgent action now. I'm hopeful that this law would set an example for other countries to follow and help us collectively make significant progress towards a more sustainable future.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about 'A new law you would like to introduce in your country,' here's how you can structure your response. First, introduce the law clearly—say what it is and why you chose it. For example, you might pick a law about reducing plastic use. Next, explain the changes this law would bring, like less pollution or healthier environments. Then, talk about whether people would like this law—maybe some would find it hard at first, but others would support it for the long-term benefits. Finally, share your feelings—are you excited, hopeful, or worried? Keep your answer natural and personal, like you're telling a story. Use simple words and connect your ideas smoothly. Practice speaking for 2 minutes, and don’t forget to cover all the points: the law, its changes, popularity, and your feelings.
