IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe something that made you confident at your work or study.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • When and where it happened
  • What you did
  • And explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

One thing that really boosted my confidence at work was when I successfully led a small team project for the first time. It happened about a year ago at my office. Our team was given a task to organize a company event, and I was chosen as the leader. At first, I felt nervous because I had never been in charge of anything like this before. But I decided to take it step by step. I made a plan, divided the tasks among the team members, and set deadlines. I also made sure everyone knew what they needed to do and checked in with them regularly. On the day of the event, everything went smoothly. The guests enjoyed themselves, and my manager praised our team for the great work. After that, I felt much more confident in my abilities. I realized that I could handle responsibilities and lead others, which was a big deal for me. It was a turning point in my career, and now I’m not afraid to take on new challenges.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about something that made you confident at work or study, here's how to structure your response: First, introduce what it was—maybe a project, feedback, or achievement—and keep it simple. Then, say when and where it happened, like 'last year during a team project at university.' Next, explain what you did—your role or actions—like 'I led the research part and presented our findings.' Finally, describe how it made you feel confident—maybe you realized your skills or got praise. Focus on clear, short sentences and natural flow. Don't memorize; just think of a real example and talk about it step by step. Practice timing to fit 2 minutes. Key points: be specific, use past tense, and show emotions—happy, proud, or motivated. Good luck!
