IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe an unusual holiday you had.

You should say:

  • When and where you went
  • Who you went with
  • What you did during the holiday
  • And explain why it was unusual

Sample Answer

One of the most unusual holidays I had was a trip to a small village in the mountains of Nepal. It happened about two years ago during the winter. I went with my best friend, Sarah, who loves adventure as much as I do. We stayed in a tiny guesthouse with no electricity or Wi-Fi, which was already quite different from our usual vacations. During the day, we hiked through the snowy trails, visited local farmers, and even helped them with their daily chores like feeding goats and collecting firewood. At night, we sat by the fireplace, listening to stories from the villagers. What made this holiday really unusual was the way we lived there. We had to wake up at sunrise because there was no artificial light, and we ate simple meals made from whatever the villagers grew. It was a complete break from our busy city lives, and it felt like stepping back in time. The experience was so unique because it was nothing like the typical beach or city holidays we were used to.

Tips & Strategies

To answer the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe an unusual holiday you had,' start by organizing your answer into four clear parts. First, briefly mention when and where you went—this sets the scene. For example, 'Last summer, I went to a tiny island in Thailand.' Next, say who you went with, like 'I traveled with my best friend.' Then, describe what you did during the holiday. Focus on activities that stand out, such as 'We explored hidden caves and swam with glowing plankton.' Finally, explain why it was unusual. Maybe it was the location, the activities, or something unexpected that happened, like 'It was unusual because the island had no cars, and we slept in treehouses!' Remember to use simple, natural language and connect your ideas smoothly. Practice speaking for about 1-2 minutes, and don’t forget to include all the key points to make your answer complete and engaging.
