IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe an occasion when you had to do something in a hurry.

You should say:

  • What you had to do
  • Why you had to it in a hurry
  • How well you did this
  • And explain how you felt about having to do this in a hurry

Sample Answer

One time, I had to pack my suitcase in a hurry because I almost missed my flight. I was visiting my family in another city, and I had stayed up late the night before, so I overslept. When I woke up, I realized I only had 30 minutes to get ready and leave for the airport. First, I had to pack all my clothes and toiletries. I was rushing so much that I forgot to fold my clothes properly—I just threw them into the suitcase. Then, I had to find my passport and ticket, which were buried under some papers on my desk. I was so stressed! Somehow, I managed to pack everything and leave the house on time. I even arrived at the airport with a few minutes to spare. But my suitcase was a mess—I had to rearrange everything later. At the time, I felt very nervous and panicked. I kept thinking I would miss my flight. But looking back, it was a funny experience. Now, I always pack the night before to avoid such situations!

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about an occasion when you had to do something in a hurry, here's how to structure your response: First, introduce what you had to do—maybe it was finishing homework, catching a flight, or helping someone. Then, explain why it was urgent—like a deadline or an unexpected situation. Next, talk about how well you managed it—did you succeed, or was it messy? Finally, share your feelings—were you stressed, proud, or relieved? Keep it natural, like telling a story to a friend. Focus on fluency and clear details, and don’t forget to use past tense since it’s about something that already happened. Practice timing yourself to fit within 2 minutes!
