IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe an important river or lake in your country.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • How big/long it is
  • What it looks like
  • And explain why it is important

Sample Answer

One of the most important rivers in my country is the Yangtze River. It is located in the central and eastern parts of China. The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest in the world, stretching about 6,300 kilometers. It flows from the Tibetan Plateau all the way to the East China Sea. The river looks very wide and powerful, especially in the middle and lower sections. The water is usually brownish because of the sediment it carries. Along the river, you can see beautiful landscapes, including mountains, valleys, and big cities like Chongqing and Shanghai. There are also many bridges and dams, like the famous Three Gorges Dam. The Yangtze River is very important for many reasons. First, it provides water for drinking, farming, and industry. Second, it is a major transportation route, helping goods move between different parts of the country. Third, it generates a lot of hydroelectric power, which is clean energy. Finally, the river has a rich history and culture. Many ancient Chinese stories and poems are about the Yangtze. I remember visiting the river with my family when I was a child. We took a boat ride, and I was amazed by its size and beauty. That trip made me realize how important the river is to our country.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the question 'Describe an important river or lake in your country,' start by introducing the river or lake and saying where it is located. For example, 'The [river/lake name] is in [location].' Next, mention its size or length, like 'It’s about [size/length], making it one of the largest/longest in the country.' Then, describe what it looks like—talk about the water, surroundings, or any special features, such as 'The water is clear, and there are mountains around it.' Finally, explain why it’s important. You can say things like 'It’s important because people use it for fishing, transportation, or tourism,' or 'It’s a symbol of our culture.' Remember to use simple words and connect your ideas smoothly. Practice speaking for 2 minutes without stopping, and try to cover all the points naturally.
