IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe an important event you celebrated.

You should say:

  • What the event was
  • When it happened
  • Who attended the event
  • And explain how you feel about the event

Sample Answer

One of the most important events I celebrated was my grandmother's 80th birthday. It happened last summer, in July, and it was a very special day for our whole family. The party was held at my uncle's house, and almost all of our relatives attended, including my parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even some close family friends. There were about 30 people in total, and everyone was so happy to be there. We decorated the house with balloons, flowers, and photos of my grandmother from different stages of her life. My aunt cooked a big meal, and we had a beautiful cake with "Happy 80th Birthday" written on it. During the party, we shared stories about my grandmother, laughed a lot, and even danced to her favorite songs. She was so touched and kept smiling the whole time. I felt really emotional about this event because my grandmother means so much to me. She has always been kind and supportive, and seeing her surrounded by love made me realize how lucky we are to have her. It was a day full of joy and memories that I will never forget.

Tips & Strategies

Alright, let's break down how to answer this question step by step. First, start by introducing the event—what was it? Maybe a birthday, graduation, or a festival. Keep it simple and clear. Next, mention when it happened—was it last year, a few months ago? Just give a rough idea. Then, talk about who was there—family, friends, or maybe even coworkers. Finally, explain how you felt about it—were you happy, excited, or maybe even a bit nervous? Try to use some descriptive words here to make it interesting. Remember, you only have 1-2 minutes, so don’t go into too much detail. Just hit the key points: what, when, who, and how you felt. Practice timing yourself so you don’t run out of time. And relax—speak naturally like you’re telling a story to a friend!
