IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time you visited a new place.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • When you went there
  • Why you went there

Sample Answer

Last summer, I visited a small coastal town called Brighton for the first time. It’s located on the south coast of England, about an hour away from London by train. I went there in July when the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for a day trip. I decided to visit Brighton because I had heard so much about its famous pier and the beautiful beach. My friends told me it was a great place to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. When I arrived, I was amazed by the colorful buildings and the lively atmosphere. The first thing I did was walk along the pier, where I tried some delicious fish and chips. Then, I spent some time on the beach, watching people swim and build sandcastles. One funny thing happened when I tried to feed the seagulls. They were very bold and almost stole my food right out of my hand! It was a bit scary but also very funny. By the end of the day, I felt tired but happy. Brighton was a wonderful place, and I would love to go back there again.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe a time you visited a new place,' here's a simple way to structure your answer. First, introduce the place—say where it is and maybe a little about it. For example, 'It’s a small town in the mountains.' Next, mention when you went there, like 'last summer' or 'a few months ago.' Then, explain why you went there—maybe for a holiday, to visit someone, or for work. Keep it natural, like you’re telling a story to a friend. Try to add details about what you saw or did there to make it interesting. For example, 'The air was so fresh, and I tried local food.' Also, pay attention to your grammar and vocabulary—use past tense since it’s about the past. Don’t rush; take your time to think and speak clearly. Practice this structure, and you’ll sound confident and organized!
