IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time you got into contact with an old friend.

You should say:

  • Who he or she is
  • When and where you met
  • What you talked about
  • And explain how you felt about this experience

Sample Answer

I remember a time when I unexpectedly got in touch with an old friend named Sarah. We had been close during high school but lost contact after graduation. Last summer, I was visiting my hometown, and one day, I went to a small café near our old school. To my surprise, Sarah was sitting there, reading a book. It felt like fate! We recognized each other immediately and started chatting. She told me about her job as a teacher and how she had moved to another city but was back for a short visit. I shared my experiences working in marketing and some funny stories from our school days. We laughed a lot and even remembered some embarrassing moments we had forgotten. The conversation was so natural, as if no time had passed. I felt really happy and nostalgic after meeting her. It reminded me of how special our friendship was and how important it is to keep in touch with people who matter. We exchanged numbers and promised to stay connected this time.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about reconnecting with an old friend, start by introducing who the friend is and your relationship with them. For example, mention if they were a childhood friend or a classmate. Then, describe when and where you met again—was it a chance encounter or a planned reunion? Next, talk about what you discussed, like catching up on life, sharing memories, or talking about future plans. Finally, explain how you felt—happy, nostalgic, or maybe surprised. Keep your answer structured but natural, and don’t forget to use simple words and grammar to sound fluent. Practice by timing yourself to ensure you cover all points within 2 minutes!
