IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time when you received money as a gift.

May - Aug

You should say:

  • When it happened
  • Who gave you the money
  • Why he/she gave you the money
  • And explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

I remember a special time when I received money as a gift. It happened last year on my birthday. My grandmother, who is very kind and loving, gave me an envelope with some money inside. She handed it to me after our family dinner, and I was surprised because I wasn’t expecting it. My grandmother explained that she wanted to help me save for something important. At that time, I was planning to buy a new laptop for my studies, and she knew how much I needed it. She said the money was her way of supporting my education and future goals. I felt very grateful and touched by her gesture. It wasn’t just about the money; it was the thought behind it that meant so much to me. I hugged her and thanked her warmly. Later, I used the money to buy the laptop, and every time I use it, I think of her kindness. This experience made me realize how lucky I am to have such a caring family.

Tips & Strategies

To answer the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe a time when you received money as a gift,' start by structuring your response into four clear parts. First, mention when it happened—keep it simple, like 'last year' or 'on my birthday.' Next, say who gave you the money, like a family member or friend. Then, explain why they gave it to you—maybe for a special occasion or to help you out. Finally, describe how you felt—happy, surprised, or grateful—and why. Remember to use simple words and grammar, and try to sound natural, like you're telling a story to a friend. Practice speaking slowly and clearly, and don't forget to include all the points: when, who, why, and your feelings. This way, your answer will be complete and easy to follow!
