IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time when you helped someone.

You should say:

  • Where you helped him or her
  • Why you helped him or her
  • How you helped him or her
  • And explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

One time, I helped my neighbor, Mrs. Johnson, when she was moving into her new house. It happened last summer in our neighborhood. She is an elderly lady, and I noticed she was struggling to carry heavy boxes from her car to the house. I decided to help her because she looked very tired, and I thought it would be kind to lend a hand. First, I introduced myself and asked if she needed help. She was very grateful and said yes. Then, I started carrying the boxes one by one into her living room. Some of them were quite heavy, but I managed to move them all. After that, I even helped her unpack a few things, like dishes and books, so she could settle in more easily. Helping Mrs. Johnson made me feel really happy. It was a small thing to do, but it meant a lot to her. She thanked me many times and even baked cookies for me the next day. This experience taught me that even a little help can make a big difference in someone’s life. I felt proud of myself for being useful and kind.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe a time when you helped someone,' here's a simple way to structure your answer. First, set the scene by saying where it happened—maybe at school, work, or even on the street. Then, explain why you helped the person. Was it because they were struggling, or did you just feel like being kind? Next, describe how you helped them. Be specific—did you give advice, lend money, or do something physical like carrying bags? Finally, share how you felt afterward. Did it make you happy, proud, or maybe even surprised? Remember to keep your answer natural and personal. Don’t rush; take your time to include all the points: where, why, how, and your feelings. Practice speaking clearly and confidently, and you’ll do great!
