IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time when you helped a child.

You should say:

  • When it happened
  • Who you helped
  • How you helped him/her
  • And explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer

I remember a time last summer when I helped a little boy named Tom. It happened at a local park where I often go for walks. Tom was about 6 years old, and he was crying because he couldn't find his mother. He looked very scared and confused. First, I knelt down to his level and asked him his name and what happened. He told me he had been playing and lost sight of his mom. I reassured him that everything would be okay and held his hand while we looked for her. I also asked some people nearby if they had seen a woman looking for a child. Luckily, one of them pointed us toward a woman who was searching frantically near the playground. When Tom saw his mother, he ran to her, and she hugged him tightly. She thanked me profusely, and I felt really happy and relieved. Helping Tom made me realize how important it is to stay calm in such situations and how a small act of kindness can make a big difference. It was a simple moment, but it left me with a warm feeling for the rest of the day.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question 'Describe a time when you helped a child,' here's a simple way to structure your response. First, start by saying when it happened—just give a rough time like 'last summer' or 'when I was in high school.' Then, mention who the child was, like a sibling, a neighbor's kid, or someone you met. Next, explain how you helped them—maybe you taught them something, helped with homework, or comforted them. Finally, share how you felt about it—happy, proud, or even surprised by how it turned out. Keep it natural and personal, like you're telling a story to a friend. Don't worry about fancy words; focus on being clear and covering all the points: when, who, how, and your feelings. Practice speaking slowly and smoothly, and you'll do great!
