IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time when you found something that somebody lost.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • Where and when it happened
  • What happened then
  • And explain how you felt about this experience

Sample Answer

One day, I was walking home from school when I noticed a small wallet lying on the sidewalk. It was a brown leather wallet, and it looked quite old. This happened last winter, near the park close to my house. I picked it up and opened it to see if there was any identification inside. Luckily, I found a student ID card with a name and a photo of a young girl. She looked about my age. There was also some money and a few receipts in the wallet. I decided to take it to the nearest police station because I thought it would be the safest place to return it. The police officer thanked me and said they would contact the owner. A few days later, I received a message from the girl whose wallet it was. She was very grateful and even offered to buy me a coffee as a thank you. I felt really happy because I could help someone in a small way. It was a simple act, but it made me realize how good it feels to do something kind for others.

Tips & Strategies

To answer the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about describing a time you found something lost, here's a simple approach: First, structure your answer into four parts to cover all the points. Start by saying what the lost item was—maybe a phone, wallet, or keys—and keep it clear. Next, explain where and when it happened, like at a park last summer or in a café last week. Then, describe what you did—did you return it to the owner or hand it to staff? Finally, share how you felt—happy to help, surprised, or maybe proud. Remember to use simple words and connect your ideas smoothly. Don’t rush, and practice speaking naturally. Focus on the details to make your story interesting!
