IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a time when you bought something from a street or outdoor market.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • How you knew it
  • What kind of thing you bought there
  • And explain how you felt about this experience

Sample Answer

Last summer, I visited a colorful outdoor market in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. It was called Chatuchak Weekend Market, and it was huge! I had heard about it from a friend who had traveled there before. She told me it was the best place to find unique souvenirs and delicious street food. When I arrived, I was amazed by the variety of things for sale. There were clothes, handmade crafts, and even pets! But what caught my eye was a small stall selling handmade wooden toys. The toys were carved beautifully, and I decided to buy a tiny wooden elephant as a gift for my niece. The seller was very friendly and even showed me how the toy was made. I paid about 200 Thai baht for it, which was a good price. After buying the elephant, I felt really happy. It wasn’t just about the toy; it was the whole experience—the lively atmosphere, the smells of food, and the joy of finding something special. I still remember that day fondly, and my niece loves her little elephant!

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about buying something from a street market, here's how to structure your response: First, introduce the market by saying where it is—maybe a famous one in your city or a small local one. Then, explain how you knew about it, like through friends, ads, or just passing by. Next, describe what you bought—something unique, tasty, or useful—and why you chose it. Finally, share your feelings about the experience: was it fun, exciting, or maybe a bit overwhelming? Remember to use simple words and natural pauses, and try to sound relaxed. Focus on details to make your answer interesting, like the colors, smells, or sounds of the market. Practice timing yourself to fit everything into 2 minutes without rushing. Good luck!
