IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.

You should say:

  • Where the place is
  • When you visited there
  • Why the air was polluted
  • And explain how you felt about the place

Sample Answer

I remember visiting Delhi, India, a few years ago during the winter season. The air pollution there was very bad, and it made the whole experience quite unpleasant. Delhi is a big city with a lot of traffic, factories, and construction work, which are the main reasons for the pollution. Also, during winter, farmers in nearby areas burn crop waste, and this makes the air even worse. When I arrived, I could see a thick layer of smog covering the sky. It was hard to breathe, and my eyes started to water. I had to wear a mask all the time, which was uncomfortable. The pollution was so bad that even the famous landmarks, like the India Gate, looked hazy and less impressive. I felt sad and frustrated because Delhi is a beautiful city with a rich history, but the pollution ruined my visit. It made me realize how important clean air is for our health and happiness. I hope the city can find ways to reduce pollution in the future so that visitors can enjoy its beauty without any problems.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about a polluted place you visited, here's how to structure your response: First, introduce the place and its location, like a city or industrial area, and mention when you went there—this sets the scene. Next, explain why the air was polluted, such as traffic, factories, or weather conditions. Then, describe how you felt—maybe you were surprised, uncomfortable, or worried about the health effects. Keep it natural and personal, like telling a story. Focus on clear, simple sentences and avoid memorized answers. Practice speaking for 1-2 minutes, and make sure to cover all the points: where, when, why, and your feelings. This way, your answer will sound fluent and well-organized.
