IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a person you met at a party who you enjoyed talking with.

You should say:

  • What party it was
  • How you met this person
  • What you talked about
  • And explain why you enjoyed talking with him/her

Sample Answer

I’d like to talk about a person I met at a friend’s birthday party last summer. It was a small gathering at her house, with about 15 people. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and everyone was having a good time. I met this person, named Alex, while we were both standing near the food table. I noticed he was holding a plate of snacks and looked a bit unsure, so I smiled and said, 'The mini sandwiches are delicious—you should try them!' He laughed and thanked me, and we started chatting from there. We talked about many things, like our jobs, hobbies, and even our favorite travel destinations. Alex is a photographer, so he shared some interesting stories about his work. I love traveling, so we had a lot to discuss about different places and cultures. The conversation flowed naturally, and it felt like we had known each other for a long time. I really enjoyed talking with Alex because he was easy to talk to and had a great sense of humor. He listened carefully and asked thoughtful questions, which made the conversation even more enjoyable. By the end of the party, we exchanged contact details and have stayed in touch since then.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about 'a person you met at a party who you enjoyed talking with,' here's how to structure your response: First, briefly describe the party—was it a birthday, wedding, or casual get-together? Keep it simple. Next, explain how you met the person—maybe you were introduced by a friend or just started chatting. Then, share what you talked about—common interests, hobbies, or something funny. Finally, focus on why you enjoyed the conversation—was it their sense of humor, interesting stories, or shared views? Remember to use natural language, like you're telling a story to a friend. Don't memorize answers; just think of a real experience and talk about it smoothly. Keep your grammar simple and clear, and practice speaking for 1-2 minutes to stay within the time limit. Good luck!
