IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a live sports event you watched before

May - Aug

You should say:

  • When it happened
  • Where it took place
  • Who you watched it with
  • And explain how you felt about this experience

Sample Answer

Last summer, I had the chance to watch a live football match at the city stadium. It was a very exciting experience for me. The match happened on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and the stadium was packed with fans. I went there with my best friend, John, who is a huge football fan like me. We bought tickets a month in advance because the match was between two popular teams, and we didn’t want to miss it. The atmosphere in the stadium was amazing. Everyone was cheering, singing, and waving flags. The energy was so high that I couldn’t help but join in. When our team scored the first goal, the crowd went wild, and John and I jumped up and down with joy. Even though the other team tied the game later, the excitement never faded. What made the experience special was sharing it with John. We laughed, shouted, and even argued a little about the referee’s decisions. By the end of the match, I felt exhausted but happy. It wasn’t just about the game; it was about the memories we made together. I still remember that day vividly, and it makes me want to go to another live match soon.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about a live sports event, start by briefly mentioning when it happened and where it took place—this sets the scene. For example, you could say, 'Last summer, I went to a football match at the local stadium.' Next, talk about who you watched it with, like friends or family, to add a personal touch. Then, focus on explaining how you felt during the event. Was it exciting? Nerve-wracking? Did you feel connected to the crowd? Use descriptive words to bring your emotions to life. Remember to structure your answer logically: introduction (when/where), details (who with), and feelings (your experience). Keep it natural, like you're telling a story, and don’t forget to use past tense since it’s about something that already happened. Practice speaking smoothly and confidently, and you’ll ace it!
