IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a city you would like to stay in for a short time.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • Who you will go there with
  • What you will do in the city
  • And explain why you would stay there for a short time

Sample Answer

I would love to stay in Kyoto, Japan, for a short time. Kyoto is a beautiful city known for its temples, gardens, and traditional culture. It is located in the central part of Japan, and I think it would be a great place to visit for a few days. I would go there with my best friend, Sarah. We both enjoy exploring new places and learning about different cultures. I think traveling with her would make the trip even more fun because we always have a good time together. In Kyoto, we would visit famous places like the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of red gates, and the Golden Pavilion, which is covered in gold leaf. We would also try traditional Japanese food, like sushi and matcha tea. Maybe we could even wear kimonos and take pictures in the bamboo forest! I would stay in Kyoto for a short time because I think a few days is enough to see the main attractions and experience the culture. Also, I wouldn’t want to spend too much money or time away from home. A short trip would be perfect for making memories without feeling too tired or overwhelmed.

Tips & Strategies

For the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about describing a city you'd like to stay in for a short time, here's a simple way to structure your answer. First, introduce the city and say where it is—like 'I’d love to visit Tokyo in Japan.' Then, mention who you’d go with, maybe friends or family, and why—like 'I’d go with my best friend because we both love exploring new places.' Next, talk about what you’d do there, like visiting famous spots or trying local food. Finally, explain why you’d only stay for a short time—maybe because it’s expensive or you have limited vacation days. Keep your answer smooth and natural, like telling a story. Focus on fluency, use simple words, and don’t forget to cover all the points: location, who you’d go with, activities, and why a short stay. Practice speaking for 2 minutes without stopping, and you’ll do great!
