IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

Describe a city that you think is interesting.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • What the city is famous for
  • Why it is interesting
  • And explain how you feel about it

Sample Answer

One city I find very interesting is Kyoto, Japan. It is located in the central part of the country and is known for its rich history and beautiful temples. Kyoto was once the capital of Japan, and even today, it feels like stepping back in time when you walk through its streets. Kyoto is famous for its traditional wooden houses, stunning gardens, and over 1,000 Buddhist temples. One of the most famous spots is the Golden Pavilion, a temple covered in gold leaf that shines brightly in the sunlight. The city is also known for its tea ceremonies and geisha culture, which add to its unique charm. What makes Kyoto so interesting is the mix of old and new. You can see modern shops and cafes right next to ancient temples. I remember visiting a small tea house near a temple, where I tried matcha tea for the first time. The owner explained the tea-making process, and it felt like a special moment. I feel very peaceful when I think about Kyoto. It’s a place where you can slow down and appreciate the beauty around you. I would love to visit again someday to explore more of its hidden gems.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about describing an interesting city, start by introducing the city and its location. For example, 'I’d like to talk about Tokyo, which is the capital of Japan.' Next, mention what the city is famous for, like its technology, culture, or landmarks—'Tokyo is famous for its modern skyscrapers, traditional temples, and amazing food.' Then, explain why it’s interesting—maybe because of its mix of old and new, or the friendly people. Say something like, 'What makes Tokyo so interesting is how it blends history with futuristic vibes—you can visit ancient shrines and high-tech districts in the same day.' Finally, share your feelings about it—'I feel excited every time I think about Tokyo because there’s always something new to discover.' Remember to use simple words, speak naturally, and cover all the points: location, fame, why it’s interesting, and your feelings. Practice by timing yourself to ensure your answer is around 2 minutes long.
