IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question

A time that you showed something new to others

You should say:

  • What you taught?
  • Whom you taught it to?
  • Why you teach it to this person?
  • And explain how you felt about it.

Sample Answer

One time, I taught my younger cousin how to bake chocolate chip cookies. She was about 10 years old and had never baked anything before. I chose to teach her because she loved eating cookies, and I thought it would be fun for her to learn how to make them herself. We started by gathering all the ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, and chocolate chips. I showed her how to measure everything carefully and mix the dough. She was very excited but also a little nervous, so I made sure to guide her step by step. When we put the cookies in the oven, she kept peeking inside to see if they were ready. After they baked, the cookies turned out delicious, and she was so proud of herself. I felt really happy because I could see how much she enjoyed learning something new. It was also a great way for us to spend time together. Teaching her made me realize how rewarding it is to share knowledge with others, especially when they are eager to learn.

Tips & Strategies

When answering the IELTS Speaking Part 2 question about 'A time that you showed something new to others,' here's how you can structure your response. First, start by briefly introducing what you taught—keep it simple, like teaching a friend to bake or showing a sibling how to ride a bike. Then, mention who you taught it to—maybe a friend, family member, or coworker. Next, explain why you chose to teach this person—perhaps they were curious, needed help, or you wanted to share your skills. Finally, describe how you felt about the experience—were you proud, happy, or maybe a bit nervous? Remember to use natural language and connect your ideas smoothly. Focus on clarity and fluency, and don’t forget to include all the required points: what, who, why, and how you felt. Practice speaking for about 1-2 minutes, and try to sound relaxed and confident!
